NOFOTA stands for the Netherlands Oils, Fats and Oilseeds Trade Association, the Dutch umbrella organisation for companies involved in the trade, production and consumption of these commodities. It drafts standard contracts that are used internationally, as outlined in the latest version of the NOFOTA Trading Rules (effective from 1 January 2025). In addition, it provides a mechanism for dispute resolution through its arbitration institute.
NOFOTA was founded in Rotterdam on 1 October 1918 as the ‘Nederlandsche Bond voor den Handel in Vetten, Oliën en Oliezaden’. The final name change to ‘Netherlands Oils, Fats and Oilseeds Trade Association’ (NOFOTA) was officially adopted in 1977, reflecting the international nature of the trade and the involvement of market participants across various European countries.
On 3 December 2018, NOFOTA was granted the ‘Royal’ designation by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander in recognition of its 100th anniversary.
